Early Flemish Tapestry

Woven in the famous Oudenaarde workshops in Flanders towards the end of this 16th century, this wonderful tapestry depicts the famous Biblical scene when the Queen of Sheba presents her gifts to King Solomon. The are surrounded by courtiers and the Queen of Sheba's maidens, but perhaps most interestingly by a group of travelers on camels in the top right corner of the field. To the right is a view of a palace with more courtiers.. Note the fine drawing of the costumes. The lovely golds greens and blues are typical of the palette of the period. All this is framed by a striking border of flowers, clusters of fruit and birds. This magnificent piece has survived in very respectable condition for its great age. It has recently been professionally cleaned and is ready for immediate hanging where it will make a highly dramatic impact.
