Tekke Ensi

This Tekke ensi is one of those rare items which is both decorative and collectible. Woven towards the end of the 19th century, this it has retained much of the character of this charming group. It is finely knotted with soft velvety wool and harmonious colours. The design is typical of the complex structure of ensis, which were used as door hangings for the yurt, and were replete with cosmic and spiritual meaning. Note the horizontal band which runs through the centre which is particularly attractive and unusual. The square format has enabled the weaver to give the design openness so that although the design has so many elements, it does not feel cluttered. This lovely piece would make a perfect wall hanging or fit into many decorative spaces. Cherished through the generations, it has survived in good condition with only minimal signs of wear or repair. Professionally cleaned.
