Kirman Laver Carpet, Circa 1870, 3.28m X 2.68m

Kirman Laver carpets are amongst the finest and most sought after 19th century Persian city carpets. Among those, the Laver carpets are considered the creme de la creme. The best examples have a fine weave with velvety wool pile clipped low, and with an array of elegant floral designs. Kirman Laver carpets celebrate maximal design and with a wonderful range of vibrant colours. This lovely piece is a great example. The elegant anchor medallion appears to be floating above the pale ivory ground and is surrounded by an array of flowers. The raspberry spandrels in the four corners of the field add to the composition which is matched by complementary floral borders. The angular drawing of the design gives this carpet an interesting twist, but it is nevertheless a fine example of Persian weaving.
