The city of Hereke in North-West Turkey is famous for its production of high quality silk rugs and carpets through the second half of the 20th century. Several exceptional master weavers produced magnificent pieces to very high standards that became one of the most recognisable and desirable groups of carpets woven in the 20th century. This beautiful carpet was woven in the early stages of this period, and dates to 1950-1970. It exudes luxury and sophistication. The silk quality is exceptional and is matched by the lovely colours and the elegantly drawn 'Heshti' design. Note the use of metal thread in some of the details to enhance the sense of luxury. The design is outstanding. Each of the sixteen panels or 'windows' in the field contains a unique floral design. The eye therefore never tires of looking at this piece. The borders are equally beautiful. The oveall impression is both luxuriant and relaxing. Woven in a lovely size, it would be ideal decoration for so many settings, either on the floor or on a wall.
