Superb Large Sultanabad Carpet, Circa 1880, 5.40m X 3.92m

A great decorative carpet needs to have many features. Wonderful colours which are well harmonised, a well-balanced design and good proportions. This carpet has the lot. The repeat design is full of beautifully drawn elements which come together in an harmonious overall composition. Some of the colours are sensational, the greens, yellows and blues in particular. Woven in the Sultanabad region of West Persia in the last quarter of the 19th century, this carpet is a fine example of the Persian Revival Period with repeating palmettes and exotic acanthus leaves. The carpet has sufficient wear to give it the ''lived-in'' look, but has been cleaned and is ready for immediate use.
