Mid-20th Century Abstract Wool Kilim, 3.05m x 1.99m.

It is difficult to attribute this striking kilim to a precise location or workshop. The liklihood is that it was made in Central Europe, either in Poland or Romania, in the 1930s. Woven with soft wool and what appear to be natural dyes, it is a finely worked piece. The design reveals the influence of modernist movements like constructivism, although closer inspection of the field suggests it may well be a 'deconstruction' of a 17th  century 'Polonaise' carpet design. The border is equally striking, again very modern but with the feel of an updated stylised floral design. The whole composition is painterly and animated, and would enhance many settings either as a colourful floorcovering or as a work of art for the wall. It has been cleaned professionaly. Very minor old repairs, otherwise in excellent original condition.
