Probably woven by the Qashqai weavers of South Persia around 1930, this beautiful jajim or 'Moj' retains its tribal authenticity. Woven in two panels sewn together, the natural dyes are striking and have been juxtaposed in a series of wide stripes creating a bold and very modernist work. Closer inspection reveals another layer of geometric patterning created by clever use of warp-sharing techniques adding to the sophistication and complexity of the design. Note too the end panels, and the little scattered baubles along the selvages and scattered in the field. Originally made by the weaver to be used as a cover or tent hanging, the superb colours and deceptively complex design transform this piece into a modernist work of art.
