Jozan Rug

Jozan Rug

Jozan is one of the weaving towns in the Sultanabad district of West Persia, close to Sarouk. 19th century Jozan rugs share many of the characteristics of Sarouk rugs, including fine wool, and very good natural dyes. However, both the weave and the drawing of the designs tend to be more rustic which gives them a more archaic appearance. In this rug you see many of these features. The field design of concentric medallions is beautifully drawn and appears to be floating above a sapphire blue outer field. Note too the saffron yellow spandrels. The main border is also quite stunning. Expressively drawn arabesques link colourful floral blossoms in a chain that frames the field. Its a charming composition. In great original condition and professionally cleaned.
