Special North-West Persian Carpet

This rare beauty was woven in North-West Persia around 1890 yet feels so contemporary. Interestingly, although it has the structure and central medallion one sees in many Heriz carpets from that region, I hesitate to ascribe that title to it. Why? There are a few good reasons. First, the wool quality is very soft and velvety with a lovely sheen that one does not see in Heriz carpets. Second, the sky-blue field is extremely rare. Indeed the entire colour palette with subtle greys, sapphire blues, dark terracottas and sharp pinks haven been combined in striking ways that are a feast for the eye, but also very 'un-Heriz-like'. Finally, the delightful terracotta border is filled with palmettes and leaves drawn in quite a naturalistic fashion. In any event, this is a supremely decorative carpet in a great size that would work in so many settings both contemporary and traditional. The light blue field feels fresh and modern, and the design although quite formal, could fit in anywhere. Professionally cleaned, and with lovely soft velvety pile, this carpet is tactile as well as decorative.
