North-West Persian Village Rug

North-West Persian Village Rug

The technical characteristics of this charming village rug from North-West Persia, namely the single-wefted structure and flat back, suggest it was probably woven in the Karaja region. However, I feel that it may be a generation older than many Karaja rugs that we see today. The ubiquitous triple medallion format is archaically drawn, as are the scattered geometric motifs in the rest of the field. The sapphire blue main border fits well with the field design and confirms the opinion that this is a pre-commercial weaving. It is generously spaced, and repeating stylised palmettes and vines are archaically drawn and very eye-catching. This rug is the work of a master weaver who knew exactly what she was creating. The limited palette is composed of a few exceptional dyes, including the terracotta red, sapphire blue, pinks and pale blues. Professionally cleaned and in good condition this is a decorative and collective Persian village rug.
