Rare Indian Cotton Dhurrie

Rare Indian Cotton Dhurrie

Indian cotton dhurries were woven in a number of different social settings including in homes, rural workshops and in jails!. Their simple designs and limited colour ranges have great decorative appeal. This piece has an extremely rare heraldic design of repeating dragons. One can only guess where Indian weavers would have come up with such an idea. Was it borrowed from Chinese art or from the early Caucasian dragon carpets? Or perhaps it was influenced by a heraldic emblem of the English military. This fascinating piece stimulates the imagination. Furthermore the light colours and the charming borders add to its decorative appeal. It would work equally well on a floor or wall. Professionally cleaned.
