Fine Hamadan Rug

Hamadan rugs are one of my favourite groups of Persian rugs. Their bold drawing and colours often result in very beautiful compositions, and are underappreciated expressions of Persian folk-art. This piece is a fine example. Probably woven in the village of Mehraban in the Hamadan district, it boasts glossy wool and a fine weave with the typical single-wefted structure. The design represents 2 long-stemmed flowers emanating from each end of the field which are surrounded by other large scale flowers, palmettes and leaves. The forms are almost abstract and are woven in daring colours in greens, pinks and light blues. The midnight blue field gives the whole composition a three-dimensional feel. The field is framed by a lovely light blue border. In excellent condition, this piece has been professionally washed by ourselves and is ready for immediate use, whether on a wall or floor.
