Early Fachrolo Prayer Rug

Early Fachrolo Prayer Rug

One of a group of Caucasian rugs known as 'Fachrolo Kazak' this rare piece dates to the 3rd quarter of the 19th century, or earlier. It has several interesting features which suggest that it is a pre-commercial period weaving. The emerald green field is unusually narrow and is framed by two main borders. The ornaments in the central field are archaic and arranged in a quasi-formal manner. The first main border is composed of halved stepped polygons and 'wine glasses' while the ivory outer border is composed of a repeating geometric ornament which resembles birds heads. It is an intriguing composition. All the dyes are superb, including the emerald green, reds, golds, and blues. There is also an organic burnt orange. While the rug is worn in places, the design reads well. A highly collectible early Caucasian rug.
