Kolyai Rug
Woven in the Kurdish villages around around the city of Hamadan, this charming Kolyai rug has the hallmarks of genuine Persian tribal weaving. It has an all-wool foundation. The camel colour is undyed wool. All the other colours are lovely saturated natural dyes. The pile is chunky and has survived in amazingly good condition, and has retained its kilim ends and original selvages. The lattice design on the camel ground is often found on Kolyai rugs, but here it is drawn beautifully and appears to be lying above another plane which is decorated in stylised floral ornaments. This is complemented by the mid-blue spandrels each containing female figures, and by the main borders of stylised birds and flowers. The whole composition is delightful. Professionally cleaned, the pile is now soft and plush.
