'Old School' Fereghan Kellei

This lovely Fereghan carpet from Central Persia precedes by a generation the Renaissance period of Persian carpet weaving at the end of the 19th century. Finely knotted with a thin pile, the exquisite colouring and refined drawing of the design are a testament to a pre-commercial weaving tradition. Furthermore, the kellei format seen here, highly popular in Persian homes, suggests that this piece may well have been made for a domestic client. The field design of repeating stylised floral ornaments on a subtle terracotta background is both complex and elegant, while the more spacious palmette main border on a sapphire field provides the perfect frame. Given the great age, this carpet has survived in reasonable condition. Professionally cleaned. Selvages restored. This is a wonderful old carpet which would look great in either a period or contemporary setting.
