Shahsavan Kilim

Shahsavan Kilim

This is a great example of Shahsavan weaving. Excellent natural dyes and hand spun wool have produced a lovely range of colours and patina. The design of repeating stripes in narrow and wide bands of different colours is ubiquitous. However, it is interesting how only the narrow bands are decorated with geometric ornamentation. On one level, it is a clever device to enliven the composition, and engages the viewer's attention. But could there also be some spiritual or mystical significance? One never really knows what is in the tribal weaver's mind. Yet that subtle feature makes this piece both highly decorative and collectible. Despite being made for domestic use, this piece has been cherished through the generations and has survived in excellent condition.
