Colourful Heriz Carpet

Heriz carpets are one of the most popular of antique Persian carpets and for very good reasons. The superb handspun wool quality and natural dyes create a wonderful range of both subtle and colourful colours which appeal to those decorating in either traditional and contemporary styles. The bold geometric designs are also very appealing. This lovely carpet is a fine example. Woven towards the end of the 19th century, all the colours are natural. The central anchor medallion is very impressive and draws the viewer in through its layers until one reaches the central point. The rest of the field is decorated with stylised leaves and flowers drawn in very graphic styles with bold colours that create a very strong impression. Note too the ivory corner elements, called 'spandrels', again very eye-catching with more colourful imagery. In contrast, the midnight blue border is very subtle with a design of repeating stylised palmettes and meandering vines. Its a delightful composition which could work in so many settings. The sturdy structure has survived in good condition with very minor signs of wear and no repairs. The selvages and ends are original and intact.
