Neiriz Afshar Rug

This lovely Afshar tribal rug was woven in the last quarter of the 19th century in Neiriz region of Kirman Province in South-East Persia. It has an all wool foundation, soft lustrous hand-spun wool pile with a symmetric knot, and the most wonderful natural dyes. Like many 19th century Afshar weavings, Neiriz rugs often have repeating boteh designs, as is the case here. However, an unusual feature is that the field is very small, while the borders are generous and dominate the composition. In particular, the ivory main border is very striking, bold in colouring and archaic in its drawing. The outer narrow guard stripes are very typical of Neiriz rugs and are beautifully drawn. Note also the long kilim ends which have been conserved by the previous owner with a lining. The rug is in generally very good condition. There is some corrosion to the brown in the background which gives the botehs a three-dimensional feel. Professionally cleaned. This is a collector's piece which would also make a handsome addition to a decorative scheme.
