Fine Silk Kashan Rug

Fine Silk Kashan Rug

This beautiful silk Kashan rug is an exceptional example of early 20th century Persian rug weaving. The silk quality is superb - soft, velvety and very tactile. The weave is fine, around 65 knots per square centimeter. But it is the design and colour combination which really identify this piece as special. Ostensibly, it seems like a classic medallion and spandrels design, but closer inspection reveals a master work. The fuchsia pendant medallion is elegantly drawn and floats above a sapphire blue field of myriad flowers, leaves and meandering vines, while the fuchsia main border is filled with repeating palmettes and botehs drawn in a graceful and poetic manner. It's a delightful composition. However, it is the details of this piece, in particular the superb secondary colours such as the golds, greens and light blues, that sparkle and bring this rug to life. Note, especially, the small flowers. Personal viewing is recommended. Cherished through the generations, it has survived in excellent condition.
