Ukrainian Kilim

The design of repeating flowering shrubs on a charcoal background seen on this charming kilim appears in many weavings across the region historically referred to as Bessarabia, which includes parts of modern Romania, Moldova and Ukraine. However, the distinctive technique of this piece, employing curved wefts and interlocking weaves, indicates an origin in Central Ukraine. There is an appealing purity to the design here. All secondary ornamentation has been stripped away. The composition is then framed by a simple ivory stepped border, a characteristic feature of Kyiv weavings. Compared to the more sophisticated tapestries woven further east in the Poltava region, this piece feels much more authentically rustic, a genuine example of the Ukrainian folk art tradition, and would make a very striking addition to many decorative schemes. The condition is also very good with a robust structure. There are a few minor scattered repairs, and one reweave in the field. It has been professionally cleaned and is ready for immediate use.
