Ukrainian Tapestry Kilim
The rustic drawing and weave suggest this kilim was woven in domestic setting away from the the craft workshops of Poltava. However it is a charming piece, with an array of delightful colours and a beautifully composed interpretation of the classic design of repeating shrubs on a charcoal background. Note the lovely pale blue floral border which frames the central field. The technique is typically Ukrainian with interlocking warps and the use of eccentric or curved wefts to create texture and depth. Note too the deliberate abrash in the charcoal background and in the border which adds to the sense of depth. This piece was undoubtedly woven to be hung, and has survived in excellent condition. Today, it would make a delightful wall hanging or floor covering and would enhance any decorate setting, contemporary or traditional.
