Bakshaish Floral Medallion Carpet

Bakshaish Floral Medallion Carpet

19th century Bakshaish carpets from North-West Persia are usually admired for their archaic drawing. However, this delightful small Bakshaish carpet is somewhat atypical. The large floral anchor medallion is drawn in a very naturalistic manner as are some of the other floral elements, including the botehs in the spandrels and blossoms in the field. Nevertheless, the structure of the weave, the soft wool quality and wonderful colours which includes a really subtle terracotta and two shades of pale blue are very much in the Bakshaish repertoire. It is a really decorative little carpet which coupled with the squarish format makes it a rare treasure. Clean and in very good condition. There are some very minor spots of repiling which have been executed professionally.
