The first quarter of the 20th century saw a revival of the art of Persian carpet with master weavers such as Amogli and Saber in Mashad, Seirafian in Isfahan and several others, leading the way. At this time, carpet weaving in the city of Qum, in Central Persia, started. Early products were woven to an extremely high artistic standard, with with use the best quality Kurk wool and silk. This carpet represents this early group of fine carpets from Qum. Woven on a silk foundation with kurk wool and silk pile, it has an elegant directional Safavid design on a sapphire blue field. Centred by a gold medallion, a tree at the base of the field is surrounded deers and birds within a floral landscape. The field is framed by a lovely turquoise blue border, again with birds and palmettes. The overall appearance is very harmonious and elegant. In excellent original condition.
