Fine Rasht Embroidery

The embroidered textiles produced in the Caspian Sea region around the city of Rasht are among the most undervalued textiles in the East. They were usually made to be use in domestic settings as covers, but some great pieces depicting portraits of important dignitaries and royalty are also known. Normally woven on a felt wool background, the embroidered work is often very ornate and accomplished. This piece is a fine example, dating to the mid-19th century. Jewel-like stars fill the field, framed by very pretty floral borders. The whole composition is extremely dynamic and very beautiful. There are a few old repairs in places, otherwise this wonderful piece has managed to survive in very good condition with little loss to the embroidery.
