Striking North-West Persian Carpet

This large and dramatic carpet from North-West Persia makes an instant impact. The archaically drawn central medallion is surrounded by angular tendrils and large palmettes which come together in a very decorative composition. Few colours have been used, but to good effect, especially the delightful abrashed terracotta and a lovely sky-blue. The free drawing of the design suggests that this carpet was made in a village or domestic setting rather than in a commercial carpet weaving workshop. The borders are more conventional in design but are so charming and colourful that they make a perfect frame for the exuberant field. Note the good size, which would make it ideal for a drawing room or dining area. I feel that this piece would work equally well in traditional and contemporary settings. In generally good condition for the age, with a few areas of minor wear. Some small restoration to the edges. Professionally cleaned in our workshop.
