Exceptional Fachrolo Rug
This sparkling Fachrolo rug reveals the best in Caucasian rugs. The dyes and graphics are simply sensational. The abrashed green field is centred by the classic Fachrolo medallion and is surrounded by numerous boxes containing archaic geometric ornaments. There is a further outer field in a lovely abrashed terracotta with more geometric ornamentation. Note the generous use of a lovely aubergine dye throughout the rug which dates it to 1870 or earlier. A subtle feature of the composition is that the field design is ostensibly in the prayer or architectural format with a niche at the bottom and top. All this action is framed by crisply drawn 'wine glass and calyx leaf' border on an ivory background. The weave is unusually fine for a rug of this type, and the pile is clipped low. It is fair to say that this piece, although of tribal inspiration, was probably woven in a workshop servicing Russian or Persian clientele. Furthermore, it has survived in very good condition with only minor signs of wear. Minimal restoration. Professionally cleaned.
