Fine North German Tapestry Cushion

This fine tapestry panel is from a group thought to have been woven in North Germany, possibly Hamburg, in the early 17th century. They were made to be used for upholstery or cushions and often depict Biblical themes. In this piece we have a scene from Genesis. Hagar is sent away by Abraham with her son Ishmael. This scene depicts the moment an angel appears before to Hagar to show the stream of water which would save her life. It captures that dramatic encounter in an elegant composition within a wooded landscape with a Medieval village to the background. And it is framed by a vibrant border of fruit and foliage. The workmanship is wonderful with beautiful details and exquisite saturated colours. Mounted and ready for immediate use.
